HiPP Bio Combiotik 1 Dutch 800g tin in a nursery

German vs Dutch HiPP: What's Actually Different?

Search for HiPP formula in the US or Canada and you'll quickly see two versions: German HiPP and Dutch HiPP. Both are made by the same family company, both are organic, and both follow the same strict EU rules for infant formula. So what's the difference, and which should you choose?

Why there are two versions

HiPP makes its formula for different European markets. Each country has its own feeding traditions and preferences, so the packs โ€” and in a few cases the recipes โ€” are adapted slightly for the country they're sold in. The German and Dutch versions are the two most popular with parents outside Europe.

The main differences

1. Packaging and size

  • German HiPP comes in a 600g cardboard box with a sealed inner bag.
  • Dutch HiPP comes in an 800g tin with a lid and scoop โ€” more formula per pack and easy to reseal.

2. Starch

Some German stages contain a small amount of starch alongside lactose, which makes them slightly thicker and more filling. The Dutch versions we sell state on the tin that lactose is the only carbohydrate. If you prefer a lactose-only formula, the German PRE stage or the Dutch versions are the options to look at.

3. Stages

German HiPP has a PRE stage as well as Stages 1, 2 and 3. The Dutch range is numbered 1, 2 and 3. Ages are printed on each pack: Stage 1 from birth, Stage 2 from 6 months, and Stage 3 from 10 months. See our guide to HiPP stages for more.

4. Label language

German packs are printed in German; Dutch packs are printed in Dutch and French. Neither is printed in English, so it's important to follow the preparation table carefully. If anything on your pack is unclear, email us and we'll translate it for you.

What's the same

  • Both are made by HiPP and are EU-organic certified (the Bio ranges).
  • Both contain natural lactic acid cultures and GOS prebiotic fibre in the Combiotik range.
  • Both meet the EU's strict composition rules for infant and follow-on formula.
  • At TenderStage, both come through the same route: sourced through our official HiPP distributor and shipped from our EU warehouse.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose German if you like the 600g size, want the PRE stage, or your baby already does well on it.
  • Choose Dutch if you prefer a resealable 800g tin and a lactose-only recipe.

If your baby is happy and thriving on one version, there's usually no reason to switch. If you do want to change, talk to your pediatrician first and switch gradually.
